News release:
15 April 2008
Sail away for charity
Disability charity Scope is offering a great opportunity to learn to sail and
take part in a race around the Isle of Wight.
The charity is organising its first-ever sailing weekend from the 19 to 22
September 2008.
This event is open to everybody – whether you are an experienced sailing
enthusiast or a complete novice but have always wanted to learn how to sail.
There will also be accessible yachts for disabled people who wish to take part
in this amazing challenge.
Each team will have its own fully qualified skipper to teach you how to sail.
Over the course of three days, participants will receive the first stage of the
Royal Yacht Association (RYA) training, spend three nights onboard the yacht
before taking part in the grand finale – a 60-mile race against all other teams
around the Isle of Wight!
Cordelia Hughes, Events Fundraiser at Scope, states: “The Isle of Wight is one
of the UK’s most famous sailing areas, so it’s a great opportunity to experience
it. We’re looking for people who have a real interest in sailing but want to
raise funds for a good cause at the same time. Whilst you’ll be enjoying the sea
and sun, you’ll be helping disabled children and adults throughout the UK.”
The money raised from the event will help Scope provide vital services for
people with cerebral palsy and supports its Time to Get Equal campaign – which
fights for equality for all disabled people.
Scope has been running challenge events since 1996 to fund the charity’s work
with disabled people. To date, Scope has raised over £23 million.
There is a registration fee of £99 and a minimum sponsorship of £650.
